Join us for another virtual discussion of Severance and its impact on the future of work. We’ll explore themes from the show and how they relate to today’s workplace trends and challenges.
We recently convened for a thought-provoking virtual gathering to delve into the critically acclaimed Apple TV show Severance. The session was so incredible we decided we needed a round two! We didn't even get to discuss season two or the goats!
In this unique "book club, but for a TV show" format, we’ll explore how the show's gripping narrative reflects the complexities of work-life balance, workplace culture, and the divide between personal and professional identities in the modern workplace.
In Severance, employees undergo a procedure that separates their work and personal lives, leading to an eerie yet fascinating exploration of how control, autonomy, and identity intersect in a corporate setting. As we discuss the show's themes, we’ll reflect on how they mirror the challenges and opportunities we face today in the HR and workplace industries. What lessons can we take from this dystopian world? And what might the future of work look like if these trends continue?
The event will feature community members sharing their thoughts on the show and its relevance to today’s workplace trends, as well as predictions for what we might see in the future. Be part of this engaging discussion that’s sure to spark new ideas and perspectives on the evolving nature of work.
Highlights from Session One:
The Dystopian Love Letter to Loneliness: We explored how the show portrays the illusion of autonomy in the workplace and how, in many ways, this is already happening in some organizations today — just with better branding and office snacks than Lumon.
The Myth of Bringing Your Whole Self to Work: We reflected on how organizations often encourage us to bring our “whole self” in order to create psychological safety which is well intentioned. However, there can be a shadow element to that, while our organizations simultaneously demand that we compartmentalize.
Invisible Severance: Community members shared that we are already severed in many ways and the scariest part is that we are conscious of it.
Siloes and Fear: One community member highlighted that managers are the link between leadership and culture. The employees are siloed and fear over each other with their form of trust amongst each other is around anti-leadership.
The Importance of Inner Work: The community discussed the importance of employees doing the inner work to find their own self worth and to have other interests, hobbies and identities separate from work. And lastly, how our stresses outside of work impact our nervous systems and ability to do work so supporting ourselves physically, emotionally and mentally is crucial.
Preparing for the Discussion:
While not required, we recommend watching both season one and two of Severance before the event to enrich your participation. If you haven’t seen it, no worries – you’re still welcome to join the discussion!
Bonus: Feel free to join the conversation with a fun Zoom background or wear something inspired by the show. Whether it’s a retro corporate look or something that screams "severed work-life balance," we’d love to see your creativity!
